Beer Excise Tax Payments

Aside from the usual real estate, income, and sales taxes that businesses pay, the Idaho beer and wine industries pay an excise tax to the federal government, to state governments, and to some local governments.

Over 40 percent of the cost of a bottle of beer or glass of wine is for taxes, including excise taxes. The 1990 increase in the national beer excise tax was devastating for the industry. Sales declined by 4.3 million barrels—the largest sales decline in the past 30 years—and 31,000 Americans lost their jobs.

Quick Facts

If all the taxes levied on the production, distribution and retailing of beer and wine are added up, they amount to more than 40% of the retail price.

The effect of beer and wine taxes on overall tax fairness is simple: increasing beer taxes makes the tax system more regressive.

9,022 Idaho jobs are created through the beer and wine industries.

At 45ยข per gallon of beer and over 4% per volume, Idaho's beer tax is the 9th highest in the United States.
